Dundee Rep Theatre
City Profile
Dundee is buzzing with new energy, very much aware of the vital role the arts can play to make a city successful - both economically and as a major contributor to its inhabitants’ quality of life. The last few years have seen the addition of a thriving contemporary arts centre and a high tech science centre, taking their place alongside the Rep in the heart of Dundee’s cultural quarter. The city also has several cinemas showing films for all tastes, countless bars, restaurants and clubs offering Dundonians and visitors alike endless opportunities to enjoy their leisure time.
With a population of approximately 150,000 people, Dundee rests on the banks of the "silvery Tay", just over an hour from Edinburgh and an hour and a half from Glasgow. Once known as the city of jam, jute and journalism (these were once its main industries), Dundee now has a thriving technological industry. It has also made great leaps forward in the field of science with a teaching hospital at the cutting edge of cancer research and endoscopic surgery. The city is also privileged to have a Maggie’s Cancer Care Centre within the grounds of Ninewells Hospital. The Centre opened in 2003 and was designed by Frank Gehry - the only original Gehry building in the UK.
Dundee Rep, as well playing an important part in the life of the city is
recognised to be among the top regional theatres in the UK. It plays to
an average audience of over 70,000 people a year attracting a very broad
cross section of the local population in terms of age and occupation.
Other tourist attractions in Dundee include the Discovery, the ship in which
Captain Scott sailed to the Antarctic; Verdant Works, a museum which tells
the story of the lives of the mill workers of Dundee; Dundee Contemporary
Arts and the McManus Art Galleries. Twenty minutes drive away is the ancient
town of St. Andrews - the home of golf. Also nearby are the splendid Glamis
Castle and Scone Palace
